Layup Lines: That was awesome

An unscheduled newsletter I just had to get off my chest.

Happy Monday and welcome back to Layup Lines, your quick recap of what’s going on in the WNBA. We weren’t going to send a newsletter today without any games, but the Sunday slate of basketball was too good to wait until Tuesday.

This 405 word newsletter should take less than 2 minutes to read.

7 thoughts from yesterday

  1. Four out of yesterday’s five games hit their overs, led by Washington beating Dallas in overtime. The game was probably the worst of the day on paper but the rookies made it a barnburner, as Paige Bueckers hit a 3-pointer to send the game to OT before Sonia Citron ended the game for the Mystics with one of her own.

  2. In the loss, Bueckers became the fastest player in league history to reach 200 points and 50 assists.

  3. It didn’t matter that Las Vegas had lost five of its last six games, or that A’ja Wilson had a slow start on Sunday. The Aces still bullied Indiana in the second half and have now beaten the Fever 16 straight times. Yes, Indiana has lost 16 straight games to Las Vegas. Yes, I took Indiana yesterday. Yes, I am dumb.

  4. Caitlin Clark is now an abysmal 1-17 on 3-pointers in her last two games. She’s also totaled 19 assists, so her entire game isn’t cratering, but the superstar still looks off. Maybe she’s not fully recovered from that quad injury?

  5. Related: We went 1-3 with our bets and were saved only by the Valkyries blowing out the Sun at home, their fifth win of their last six games.

  6. In other news, the Dream put up an easy 93 points against the floundering Sky and Seattle handed the Liberty the third loss of their last four games. Gabby Williams is on a mission.

  7. New York was already missing Jonquel Jones and also had Sabrina Ionescu sit out with a neck injury. The Liberty are not a deep team and it’s so hard to repeat as champs in the WNBA that it’s getting easy to see how the Liberty don’t get there this year. One or two more ill-timed injuries and Minnesota will be the clear favorite by playoff time.
