Layup Lines: Clark sits again

Plus, Washington's young post players take on A'ja Wilson.

Happy Thursday and welcome back to Layup Lines, your quick recap of what’s going on in the WNBA.

  • Scheduling note: I’m writing this from the air somewhere over the Pacific Northwest, where I’m spending the weekend for my brother’s bachelor party. He’s stuck with me as best man so I’m taking the weekend off from the newsletter to fully focus on my guy. Have a great weekend and see you back here Monday!

This 431 word newsletter should take less than 2 minutes to read.

3 takeaways from last night

  1. I am officially ready for Marine Johannes to get more playing time for the Liberty. She was a game-high +12 in plus/minus (how the team does when you’re on the floor) last night and honestly, there are like 10 people on the planet who can make this kind of ridiculous one-footed fadeaway 3-pointer. And yet she averages under 20 minutes per game. More Marine, please.

  2. Speaking of the Liberty, a very nice road win to fend off the Valkyries and a career-best night from Kate Martin in front of a ballistic Golden State home crowd.

  3. Connecticut scored six total points in the first quarter on 3-16 shooting en route to losing to the Aces by 26. At times it felt like 46. I might not watch the Sun again this season.

Today’s games

  • After going 2-0 with our bets last night, we’re 44-38 this season with a $146 profit off an initial $1,000 budget.

  • There are two games tonight on Prime Video — Los Angeles @ Indiana (7pm ET) and Washington @ Las Vegas (10pm).

    • Caitlin Clark is out with a groin injury but has also had a rough last couple games. Maybe she would’ve regained her shooting stroke against the Sparks’ traffic cone defense, but considering all of Clark’s injuries this season have involved the left leg, resting makes more sense. Indiana should be fine regardless.

      • Bet: Indiana -5.5, $50 to win $45.

    • The Aces are on the second night of a back to back and the Mystics are not intimidated by any friend or foe.

      • Bet: Washington +8, $50 to win $45.

Graphic to go
